Mart 2019

Exhibitions, in-depth focuses, special projects. This is Mart 2019

The first major exhibition for 2019 renews the relationship between the Mart and the German VAF-Foundation, whose collection scope embraces modern and contemporary Italian art and outlines its varieties.
The exhibition year will close with an extraordinary international collaboration with the Guggenheim of Bilbao. The two European museum colossuses, created in the same historical-urbanistic period by two starchitects in cities with industrial pasts, present a major research project curated by Germano Celant.
There will be no shortage of in-depth focuses on the museum's Collections, the projects of the Archivio del '900, the exhibitions at the Casa d’Arte Futurista Depero and the Galleria Civica in Trento.

MART

Passion. 12 Italian Art Projects
curated by Daniela Ferrari and Denis Isaia
in collaboration with VAF-Foundation
23 February - 4 August 2019 | second floor
25 May - 8 September 2019 | first floor

The exhibition will take up residence for more than half a year in the galleries dedicated to temporary exhibitions on the first and second floors of Mart. Organized into different periods and sections, Passion is a major project dedicated to VAF-Foundation, the largest collection in storage at Mart. Born of a great passion for Italian art, the German Foundation has amassed one of the world's most extensive collections of contemporary Italian works.
The exhibition is organized into twelve distinct but interpenetrating thematic areas in 20th-century painting and sculpture. The various sections weave a dense network of relations highlighting the many diverse expressions of the Italian artistic quest.
The exhibition includes more than 250 works, featuring masterpieces by the foremost modern and contemporary artists: Medardo Rosso, Carlo Carrà, Giorgio de Chirico, Alberto Savinio, Massimo Campigli, Felice Casorati, Renato Guttuso, Ettore Colla, Agostino Bonalumi, and Giuseppe Uncini.

Richard Artschwager
curated by Germano Celant
in collaboration with Guggenheim Museum Bilbao
12 October 2019 - 2 February 2020 | second floor

Entrusted to curator Germano Celant, the largest exhibition ever presented in Europe on US artist Richard Artschwager (1923-2013) will be staged first in Italy, then in Spain.
Focusing on understanding space, everyday objects and perception, Artschwager's poetics imposed itself as a unique case in the art of the past century. His works deal with the representation of utilitarian tools reproduced with industrial materials such as formica, Celotex, acrylic paint and aluminium.
Added to these founding aspects is the attention devoted to pure geometric form and painterly illusionism. The result is paintings and sculptures that suspend the categories of the image and objects in a limbo between the space they physically occupy, the utility they reference and the artistic representation.
